Ciena Corporation upgraded the Pacific Wave international network peering facility with its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform augmented with WaveLogic coherent optical processors.

The Pacific Wave international network connects research and education (R&E) networks in 40 countries located in the Pacific Rim besides other nations. It is expected that this deployment will provide 100Gb/s networking capabilities to Pacific Wave’s extensive network infrastructure extending from Los Angeles to Seattle in the west coast.

Rod Wilson, senior director of External Research, Ciena said, “R&E efforts require high speed networks that can quickly and reliably transfer massive amounts of data and applications over greater distances. Ciena’s coherent optical solutions provide the economical and exponential growth in bandwidth requirements required to support data-intensive, collaborative research projects.”

The 100G backbone connects Pacific Wave’s major peering locations and will deliver regional and national high-speed connectivity between major education and research institutions. It will also allow global research and education institutions to collaborate easily in data-intensive fields such as astronomy, oceanography, high-energy physics, and genomics, highlighted officials.

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives (CENIC) and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) selected Ciena for this deployment to comply with the recent Internet2 upgrades and the U.S. Department of Energy (ESnet) 100G backbone upgrades. CENIC and PNWGP operate the Pacific Wave as a joint project.

“This upgrade is the latest step forward in Pacific Wave’s long history of advanced approaches to Layer 2 networking. The 100G upgrade to the Pacific Wave backbone will help empower the next revolution in global scientific collaboration and Science DMZ-model research networking. Ciena’s impressive track record in high-speed fiber-optic network builds helps ensure that California research and education benefits fully from advanced networking,” said Louis Fox, president and CEO, CENIC.

Officials explained that the Pacific Wave peering facility’s West Coast backbone will be powered by coherent technology, a component of Ciena’s OPn architecture. This will ensure the scale and capacity required to match bandwidth requirements of large-scale E-science, distributed computing and storage applications.

Also Ciena’s 6500 will enable the Pacific Wave’s West Coast backbone to leverage the Internet2 backbone as a fully separated “virtual wave.” This delivers the advantages of a private fiber network using managed spectrum cost effectively.

Recently, Ciena announced that FiberLight, LLC, a provider of Dark Fiber optical transport network solutions, has deployed Ciena’s packet networking solutions to build mobile backhaul networks for two major US wireless operators.
