Forthnet Group, one of the largest privately owned groups that provide broadband and pay TV services in Greece, has recently deployed the first Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) pilot network in the metropolitan area of Athens, Greece. This facility was made possible using the ADTRAN (News - Alert) GPON solution that supports high-bandwidth triple play services to residential and business subscribers.

Officials at Forthnet said that they chose ADTRAN’s technology to help their customers easily migrate to the new FTTH services and also to keep a balance between bandwidth and capacity to cater to the future demands of new media-rich services.

Mr. Giannis Kavaklis, chief commercial director at Forthnet, said that they believe their future strategy for the transition to next generation networks should be based on FTTH architecture.

“By taking this approach, we are not only enabling the Metropolitan area of Athens to make the necessary technology leap, but are also giving local residents and businesses the opportunity to use new bandwidth hungry applications without fear of reduced performance or latency. ADTRAN’s FTTH solution not only gives us the bandwidth required today, but also provides a simple migration path forward that helps us to stay competitive in our market in the long term,” Kavaklis added.

Officials at ADTRAN said that their GPON solution utilizes GPON Encapsulation Mode (GEM (News - Alert)) to carry Ethernet traffic exclusively. Data traffic is carried natively as Ethernet, which is a very efficient means of transporting high-bandwidth data connections. A GPON network consists of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) located at the CO and a set of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) located at the customer's premises. Between them lies the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) consisting of fibers and passive splitters or couplers.

“FTTH is a game changer for service providers like Forthnet,” says Dr. Eduard Scheiterer, Managing director, ADTRAN Europe. “Our GPON solutions give Forthnet maximum flexibility and the scalability needed to accommodate future network growth.”

ADTRAN solutions are currently in use by service providers, private enterprises, government organizations, and millions of individual users worldwide.

ADTRAN is a Gold Sponsor of ITEXPO Miami 2013, taking place Jan. 29- Feb 1 in Miami, Florida. ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premier IP communications event. Visit ADTRAN in booth #300. For more information on ITEXPO, click here.
