Bharti Airtel (News - Alert), a specialist in telecommunications, and Comtech EF Data (News - Alert) Corporation, a global icon in satellite bandwidth efficiency and link optimization, have been recognized with the Best Backhaul Solution for Africa Award.
The honor recognizes excellence in enhancing backhaul capacity and service in Africa.
In a statement, Daniel Enns, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development for Comtech EF Data, said that, “We are honored to be the recipient of this esteemed award and to receive recognition of our significant contribution to backhaul connectivity in Africa.”
To ensure robust service expansion and to support a growing subscriber base across rural areas and remote villages in Africa, Bharti Airtel needed to upgrade its satellite-based network infrastructure.
For this reason, the company selected the satellite mobile backhaul solution from Comtech EF Data, and was thus able to effectively enhance voice and data communications within the region.
Eben Albertyn, CTO at Airtel Africa, said that, “We congratulate Comtech EF Data on this achievement. Their solution is instrumental in our providing best-in-class mobile services to Africa.”
Bharti Airtel selected Comtech EF Data’s award-winning CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem with DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier bandwidth compression, in addition to the CX-U Series provided by Memotec, a subsidiary of the company for the project. The DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier solution enables the sharing of transponder space by transmission and receipt carriers of a duplex link.
Because DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier supports the latest in modem technology, it can be easily deployed in bandwidth-limited and power-limited scenarios, and can help in ensuring a substantial reduction in earth station BUC/HPA power requirements.
Bharti Airtel deployed a number of CX-U models to ensure robust optimization of the RAN, as well as to reduce the backhaul bandwidth needed for supporting mobile services over restricted links.
Additionally, Bharti Airtel was able to leverage Comtech EF Data’s bandwidth optimization technologies to bring down overall satellite transponder consumption from 17 to 12. It was also able to reduce network OPEX (News - Alert) for some satellite links by almost half.
Bharti Airtel also succeeded in optimizing coverage across rural areas and was successful in providing reliable and quality-based services to end users.
