TeliaSonera (News - Alert) has been operating in Kazakhstan for a while now, where in 2011, the company announced a merger with the local telecom operator Kcell to provide a local touch to its services in the country. Now, TeliaSonera has revealed that it has acquired a WiMax network in six cities of Kazakhstan in the 2.5/2.6 GHz band. The company has taken this step in hopes of seeing an increase in the demand for mobile data in the coming days.

Kcell, TeliaSonera’s subsidiary in Kazakhstan, will have complete access to these businesses on commercial terms after the completion of the transactions. It has currently installed the backbone capacity of KazTransCom's national fibre optic network, and has also started preparing for the installation of the frequencies of Alem Communications.

Kcell has been offering improved network coverage services for the past 13 years. The mobile communication services offered by the company are now available in almost 5000 cities and settlements of Kazakhstan.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to finalize these transactions which are crucial for Kcell’s continued leadership in mobile data,” explained Tero Kivisaari, president, Mobility Services and Business Area Eurasia, TeliaSonera. “This reaffirms our strategic commitment to develop mobile technologies and services in Kazakhstan. The transactions will secure frequencies, as well as further backbone capacity at competitive prices, for Kcell in the years to come. This is very important for Kcell’s future competitiveness, as data volumes continue to grow rapidly.”

In 2010, Telepo added TeliaSonera as its first major communications service provider. With this, Telepo looked to provide Unified Communications (News - Alert)-as-a-Service (UCaaS) with the help of the Telepo Business Communication Solution. Telepo’s (News - Alert) software platform allows service providers to provide unified communications as a service to the enterprise segment.
