Hibernia Atlantic (News - Alert) recently announced that it will now be known as Hibernia Networks. This name change is in line with the company’s mission of changing its mission from being a transatlantic centric provider of high bandwidth connectivity solutions to a specialist provider of global solutions.

In a statement, Bjarni Thorvardarson, CEO for Hibernia Networks said that “Hibernia has evolved well beyond its original transatlantic serving area. Today, as Hibernia Networks, our company reflects a unified team offering worldwide network services to a focused, but expanding, customer base.”

Hibernia Networks includes three strategic platforms, which will meet the bandwidth needs as well as highly specialized requirements of key markets, which include the wholesale, financial and media sectors. To further its global focus, Hibernia Media will integrate with the Hibernia Networks platform. Currently, the company’s global network reach comprises of 120 points of presence (PoPs) in North America, Ireland, United Kingdom, and Europe.

Established in 2003, Hibernia essentially began humbly with the purchase of two transatlantic submarine cables and cable landing stations. TE SubCom (formerly Tyco Submarine Systems) built the system at an initial cost of around one billion dollars. In 2005, Hibernia started carrying traffic across its network after the successful establishment of backhaul routes reaching both London and New York. The company also has successfully completed a number of network expansions in the last 10 years which include Project Kelvin - a high capacity route into Ireland; number of new low latency routes into Asia; as well as acquiring of MediaXtream and Telia Media Connect.

Hibernia Networks’ global network currently connects North America, Europe, and Asia. The company also provides more than 120 network Points of Presence (PoPs) over nearly 24,000 kilometers of fiber.

Hibernia Networks, which essentially caters to the needs of the wholesale, financial and media market segments, provides its customers with quality-based support, and high-level of flexibility and service. The wholesale services of the company offer customers secure and diverse dedicated Ethernet, DTM, and optical-level services.
