EXFO Unveils Product to Save Time, Money in DWDM Troubleshooting

EXFO (News - Alert), one of the foremost purveyors of testing and service products for the telecommunications industry, has just unveiled its newest product, WDM Investigator, with an expected ship date of March 2013.

This product allows network operators to pinpoint impairments in DWDM networks, cutting time and costs in maintenance and troubleshooting. WDM Investigator, an option on the FTB-5240S/BP Optical Spectrum (News - Alert) Analyzers, also allows users to assess problems on a per-channel basis, making for quicker bug hunting.

With tightened channel spacing, ROADMs, and polarization-multiplexed signals, DWDM networks grow more and more complex. As a result, network operators have looked to reduce OPEX (News - Alert) and make faster repairs. Greater technology results in a greater potential for failure, and once-uncommon impairments such as crosstalk and non-linear effects are becoming more common.

Ways for solving these problems have been few and far between, and service providers have tried to identify ways to determine impairments before they can further degrade signals in the network.

While past impairment types were relatively few and well known (e.g., excessive loss, high dispersion and excessive ASE noise), the newly deployed technologies give rise to previously uncommon impairments, such as crosstalk and non-linear effects. Service providers have been looking for ways to identify these impairments and their impact on signal degradation in order to troubleshoot DWDM networks more quickly and effectively.

WDM Investigator helps to solve these issues by offering insights into signal impairments and link characteristics such as polarization-multiplexed signals. By pinpointing such impairments as PMD depolarization, carrier leakage, non-linear effects, and crosstalk, EXPO's new tool pinpoints issues in way that saves time and money for network operators.

In a recent article, Étienne Gagnon, vice president of EXFO’s Test and Measurement Division, said of WDM Investigator, "This new option on the FTB-5240S/BP pays for itself in just a few troubleshooting tickets. In addition, it further strengthens EXFO's no. 1 market-share position in the portable OSA market, as recognized by Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert)."

EXPO’s new product is poised to provide value to DWDM network operators.
