Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (HEP Group), the Croation government’s national utilities company, and ADVA (News - Alert) Optical Network, yesterday announced the first successful application of 100G Ethernet technology in the country. Both companies together conducted a successful testing of the technology over 400km, between the cities of Zagreb and Split, in collaboration with their regional partner ITeRATIO.
Seen by many as the next step along the road to modernizing the country’s communications infrastructure, director of IT and Telecommunications for HEP Group, Zelimir Pibercnik, said that while over €3.3 million was spent on upgrading the country’s network infrastructure to 10G, also in conjunction with ADVA Optical Network, further demand for high-speed data transfer is motivating the 100G upgrade. He hopes that addressing these demands, by increasing the network’s performance and flexibility, will encourage both local and foreign investment in the region going forward.
Responsible for Croatia’s electricity, heat and gas needs for over a century, HEP Group’s 2.3 million customers will be the first in the region to enjoy the 100G technology it has planned, giving the group a great advantage when supporting the region’s development. Among its infrastructural features are 25 hydroelectric and eight thermal power plants, as well as a sprawling network of transformers.
Andreas Jelinek, ADVA Optical Networking’s (News - Alert) sales director for Eastern Europe, acknowledges the huge potential for growth in Croatia, as this is the first time such technology has been deployed there. The high-speed plan will not only cut both operational costs and complexities, but will also provide HEP with the network capacity to implement future services and development enterprises, both privately and publically.
Using BERT, RFC 2544 and EXFO (News - Alert) FTB-500 testing measurements, the successful initial deployment demonstrates that ADVA FSP 3000 can be deployed to support 100G transfer speeds, by way of a cost-effective and simple upgrade to the existing network infrastructure – both increasing its capacity generally and cutting data transfer costs.
