Crehan Research has unveiled its newest report on Server-class Adapter & LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM). As per Crehan’s long-term predictions, server-class networking bandwidth is set to increase fivefold by 2017.

With the increase in traffic requirements and corresponding augmented network capacity at data centers, the server-class networking bandwidth is expected to cross 900 terabits in 2017.

According to Crehan, considerable bandwidth augmentation will be mainly due to imminent enhancements, like shifting from 1 Gbps Ethernet (GbE) to 10GbE, from 8Gbps Fiber Channel to 16Gbps Fiber Channel, and from QDR Infiniband to FDR Infiniband.

The quickly rising development in network devices, omnipresent connectivity and richer applications can only be managed with these augmentations.

The maximum impact will be experienced with the shifting to 10GbE, accounting for a minimum of 60 percent of the overall bandwidth by 2014.

As per Crehan, 10GbE server-class adapter and LOM shipments will outdo GbE by 2014.

In a statement, Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research said, "Even without a very high attach rate of 10GbE LOMs on volume enterprise rack servers due to the current high 10GbE Modular LOM end-customer price premiums, there is enough volume on alternative server platforms such as Cloud, Blade and High-end servers to drive the 10GbE transition within a couple of years. Furthermore, with the default inclusion of a four-port GbE Modular LOM on many Romley-based volume enterprise servers, the native Ethernet networking bandwidth (and number of ports) on these servers has been doubled at no additional price to customers."

According to the Crehan report, while GbE has experienced development, 10GbE has experienced much quicker development, ensuring extremely vigorous mutual Ethernet port development.

The switches that connect these devices to the network will also be much in demand due to the augmentation in server-class adapter and LOM bandwidth. Crehan predicts strong development for data center switches as majority of server-class devices inhabit in data centers as well.
