In this week’s Dark fiber news, Google (News - Alert) Fiber, in Kansas City, said it’s able to deliver Internet speeds that are 100 times faster than most locations worldwide. This was an important win for Kansas, which was up against 1,100 other locations as the destination for the new fiber center.

Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. It was first developed over 30 years ago and has revolutionized the way and speed at which people can communicate.

Kansas’s business owners are able to take advantage of the new ‘fiberhoods’ for as little as $70 for a super fast and reliable fiber optic network.

In more Dark Fiber news, Comcast Corporation will be introducing Carrier Ethernet 2.0 to its product line. Comcast said it’s the first service provider to offer this to its clients allowing businesses to receive better service and manage their networks more efficiently.

“A milestone was reached this year when for the first time Carrier Ethernet services share of bandwidth exceeded the sum total of all legacy telecom services across the world, with Frost & Sullivan, Vertical Systems and Infonetics (News - Alert) predicting a near $48 billion services market by 2015,” said Nan Chen, president of MEF (News - Alert). “We are therefore very pleased to see that Comcast has achieved the latest milestone in our industry—becoming the first CE 2.0 service provider.”

This new technology will be available in 39 out of 50 states in America.

Lastly, Fox revealed that its popular SlimBox solution would now be available to be integrated with FTTH connections helping to expand deployments to both single and multifamily units.

Jason Pedder, director Product Marketing, EMEA Cable and Connectivity for OFS (News - Alert) said, “Service providers want to increase revenues and reduce costs by connecting customers faster, with lower skilled labor. The SlimBox Drop System is designed to meet this need by supporting plug and pay drop connections, splitters, and splicing, all within a common platform.”

The system will offer everything from plug and play connections, standard SC-APC (News - Alert) Connectors, one terminal part that will support up to 16 connections, labeling on the inside of the system, and a OFS AllWave FLEX+fibre standard solution.

The solution was presented earlier this month at the FTTH conference in London.
