Fujitsu’s (News - Alert) Network Communications division recently teamed up with Bright House Networks to run a trial of Fujitsu’s 400G transport technology. The test, which was conducted on a live network using Fujitsu’s 400G optical networking transceivers over Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platforms (Packet ONPs), was a success, as the tech was able to increase the flexibility of the cable systems’ existing network. This was Fujitsu’s first 400G trial with a cable operator.
Bright House Networks is among the largest owners and operators of cable systems in the U.S. and, as such, is always looking to evolve its network infrastructure to meet customer needs. With increasing demand for high-bandwidth services like video on demand, interactive Web capabilities and HD video, it’s easy to imagine why the operator is interested in 400G technology.
Bright House Networks also provides a number of business solutions — including communications offerings like hosted voice — which also require speed and reliability.
Fujitsu’s FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP and 400G Super Channel Solutions allow network operators like Bright House Networks to optimize their existing equipment and infrastructure, as well as manage capital expenditures as they transition to greater bandwidth. With the successful demonstration of 400G over current hardware, Fujitsu is already looking ahead to 800G. In fact, the company has already attempted an error-free rate of 800G successfully.
“Our work with Fujitsu allows us to further advance our current transport infrastructure, from 10G to 100G and now 400G and beyond,” said Craig Cowden, SVP of network engineering, operations and enterprise solutions at Bright House Networks, in a statement. “This initiative provides us with the ability to upgrade the amount of bandwidth available on our existing DWDM infrastructure to support the ever-increasing High Speed Data requirements of our customers and new initiatives, such as fiber to the home, for years to come.”
