The Iron Mountain (News - Alert) underground data center near Pittsburgh, Pa., serves over 156,000 customers around the globe from the depths of a converted Limestone mine. The mine location was originally chosen to protect the facility's contents from a potential nuclear assault amidst the Cold War climate, but the data center is now focused on more modern priorities. Local VoIP and fiber-based data service provider Lumos Networks made the announcement that they have delivered 10-Gig wavelength connectivity to the famous data center. This marks the thirteenth data center to be added to the Lumos fiber network.

Lumos Networks serves carrier, business and residential customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region with fiber-based services with a fiber-optic network that stretches approximately 7,414 miles, and the company could not be happier to add Iron Mountain to their network. “Our 10-Gig wavelength contract win with Iron Mountain sits at the convergence of several of our key Strategic Data growth strategies: Western Pennsylvania, data centers, and wavelengths,” said Lumos President and CEO Timothy Biltz.

Biltz went on to comment that “Iron Mountain is a marquee win for Lumos, and we are delighted that they have chosen to be our partner for the delivery of secure, redundant mission critical fiber bandwidth in and out of their national data center. This represents a key step towards monetizing our upgraded and re-designed fiber assets in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.”

The added 10-Gig connectivity will help Iron Mountain deliver more data to their customers faster, in locations around the world including Asia, South America, and of course the United States. “Iron Mountain is always working to enhance connectivity options,” said Iron Mountain's Daniel Golding, who serves as the Vice President of Operations. “Lumos' reliability, reach, and flexibility makes them an excellent partner for wavelength-scale connectivity. We look forward to working with them to expand our customers' bandwidth options.”
