SEACOM’s (News - Alert) international network involves multiple submarine cable systems connecting Africa to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Its submarine and terrestrial networks, enable carriers, network operators, and service to grow their operations across Africa and beyond.

The company was looking out for a stable platform to differentiate its services and manage costs as it scales network capabilities. After a detailed analysis, the company finalized on Infinera’s (News - Alert) DTN-X platform to be deployed on SEACOM's terrestrial network providing services to the African continent.

The DTN-X is purpose-built to integrate switching with DWDM, without compromises in capacity. The architecture of the DTN-X extends the ease of use and reliability of Infinera’s successful DTN in a new multi-terabit platform that scales for the future, is simple to operate and efficiently reduces the number of elements in the network.

Claes Segelberg, CTO at SEACOM said that the need for bandwidth in Africa is growing substantially and SEACOM's network is ready to address this increase in demand for its customers.

"The Infinera Intelligent Transport Network enables SEACOM to offer 100 Gbps services and provides us with the ability to offer higher speed services to accommodate existing customers and attract new customers," Segelberg added.

SEACOM will use Infinera’s Intelligent Transport Network featuring the commercially available single-card 500 Gbps FlexCoherent super-channel solution, which is based on Infinera's widely deployed photonic integrated circuits.

Additionally, Infinera's intelligent software can be used with converged platform to power network operations, which will drastically reduce both operational cost and service delivery times.

Infinera is also introducing third-generation 500 Gbps PICs that integrate more than 600 optical functions and deliver the world’s first 500 Gbps superchannels, providing a foundation for the DTN-X’s superior scale, simplicity and efficiency.

Chris Champion, senior vice president, EMEA sales said that they are honored to work with SEACOM to deploy the DTN-X platform. “This network upgrade continues our longstanding relationship with SEACOM and reflects positively on the success of SEACOM's prior deployment of the Infinera DTN," Champion added.
