Cary Residents to Enjoy AT&T's 1 Gigabit Network

Residents and businesses in Cary will soon enjoy ultra-fast Internet access, powered by AT&T (News - Alert). This announcement came after Town official’s inked new agreement with AT&T recently.


As per the virtue of the agreement, AT&T is all set provide U-verse with GigaPower over a fiber network with speeds capable of up to 1 gigabit per second. 

The agreement between AT&T and Town of Cary happened through The North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) initiative. The NCNGN includes six cities, four leading universities, and local business leaders working to boost development of high-speed broadband networks in the state.

"Our community is hungry for ultra-high speed internet, and signing the agreement moves us one step closer to ensuring we continue to keep Cary one of the best places in the country to live, work and raise our families," said Mayor Harold Weinbrecht.

To offer greater accessibility to its customers, AT&T has till date devoted more than $1.6 billion in its North Carolina wireless and wireline networks between 2011 and 2013 and has served the state of North Carolina for 133 years and employs more than 6,800 people across the state.

AT&T plans to introduce the U-verse in more areas of North Carolina and this service is currently available in Raleigh, Cary, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Asheville and surrounding areas.

 “We've already received great input from North Carolinians eager for the fastest available speeds," said Venessa Harrison, president, AT&T-North Carolina. "This ultra-fast fiber build will help foster innovation, enhance education, and encourage growth." 

The company has also familiarized the AT&T U-verse footprint with GigaPower to thousands of households in Austin, Texas and surrounding communities in December 2013, and plans to expand the fiber network to double the households in the Austin area this year to keep up with the customers demand.

AT&T currently includes more than 32,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hot spots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and provides access to more than 529,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. The company currently offers 4G LTE (News - Alert) service to its 280 million Americans customers.
