Univa Integrates with OpenSolaris Operating System

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

Software solutions provider Univa UD reportedly announced its integration with OpenSolaris operating system, and subsequently revealed the availability of the native OpenSolaris version of UniCluster, its HPC management product.

The OpenSolaris OS is an open-source software, offering a variety of tools. OpenSolaris 2009.06 is the latest release of the OpenSolaris Operating System, which is said to be a powerful and complete operating environment for users, developers and deployers.

UniCluster is Univa’s (News - Alert) leading HPC systems management software product that offers an alternative to commercial cluster schedulers by integrating a range of technologies into a single, unified stack.

“Integration with the OpenSolaris Operating System will bring UniCluster capabilities to a vast new audience of users,” said Gary Tyreman, senior vice president of products and alliances at Univa UD, in a statement. “Univa is committed to providing the support needed across key end user software and systems such as the OpenSolaris OS to ensure technical computing customers have the capabilities they need.”

By integrating UniCluster with the OpenSolaris OS, the company aims to offer a complete, fully integrated HPC cluster management stack for OpenSolaris. In addition, UniCluster for the OpenSolaris OS also offers broad scalability up to 5,000 compute nodes, further increasing applicability for large enterprise users. The product is functionally equivalent to the Linux version.

“We are pleased to see the level of commitment that Univa is showing to the OpenSolaris software and its users,” said Fritz Ferstl, director Sun Grid Engine, Sun Microsystems (News - Alert), in a statement. “Sun is working closely with Univa to ensure the success of the integrations and are fully supportive of this effort, which will bring an expanded level of HPC systems management functionality – and eventually cloud capabilities – to the OpenSolaris community.”
