Amazon Web Services Launches Asia Pacific Region

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Cloud computing company Amazon Web Services or "AWS" announced the launch of their first Asia Pacific Region.

With this development, Asia Pacific-based businesses or global businesses with customers based in Asia can use AWS suite of infrastructure Web services to create their businesses. The new Web service also helps these customers run their applications in the cloud.

Earlier AWS platform has been accessible only from datacenters in the U.S. and Europe. By opening the platform in the Asia-Pacific region, AWS allows businesses to deploy applications closer to user populations and ultimately provide an enhanced user experience, company officials said

Any business or software developers can sign up into AWS and instantly get started.

The first AWS Asia Pacific Region is located in Singapore, company officials said.

AWS was first launched in 2006. Prior to that, businesses had to spend huge capital investment to build their own infrastructure or they had to make contract with a vendor for a fixed amount of datacenter capacity.

The major issue associated with this vendor system was the fixed capacity allotted to them. In some case the capacity will be insufficient whereas in other cases, users end up paying for wasted capacity.

After the launch of AWS, businesses were able to tackle this situation, company officials said. Businesses had to no more manage their own datacenter or a co-location facility. They were able to concentrate more on their actual business.

Businesses can use AWS without any additional expenses or long-term commitments. This helps them reduce capital expenses. They pay for what they use. Resources can be added or removed as quickly as they wish. AWS also offers business high operational performance, reliability, or security.

"We look forward to helping Asia Pacific companies accelerate their time to market and spend their scarce engineering resources on what differentiates their business rather than on infrastructure," Andy Jassy, senior vice president of Amazon Web Services (News - Alert), said.

Small, medium and large enterprises are using AWS in more than 190 countries around the world. Some of the leading users are NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Eli Lilly and so on.

AWS has a wide partner community. These partners offer different options and flexibility for using AWS.  Leading partners of AWS include Red Hat (News - Alert), Oracle, Sun, MySQL, IBM, salesforce.com and so on.

Deloitte, CapGemini, Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services are some of the consultancies of AWS.

"Capgemini (News - Alert) is delighted by the launch of the Singapore region," Simon Plant, product lead of Cloud Computing, Capgemini, said.  "This is yet uplift in the capability of AWS and provides our global client base with more choice and flexibility."

Earlier in April, AWS announceda strategic initiative with business management software provider NetSuite (News - Alert) to further connect and integrate their respective cloud platforms.
