AMFELTEC Granted Patent for Batteryless System Logger for Embedded Applications

AMFELTEC Corporation, a provider of equipment dedicated to hardware/software development and electronic design manufacturing, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted a patent for the “Smart Batteryless Backup Device and Method Therefor.” This patent, which brings the number of company patents issued to five, covers the utility function of its Batteryless System Logger.

The new patent highlights the approaches used in the Batteryless System Logger that allow the Logger to continuously store log information, even when electrical characteristics of the System Logger are fluctuating due to humidity and temperature influences.

“We are pleased to be recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for our pioneering work in this area”, says Alexander Feldman, product manager at AMFELTEC (News - Alert) Corporation. ”In granting us this patent, the patent office recognizes that AMFELTEC Smart Batteryless Backup Technology is new and non-obvious in view of all known previous technologies.”

Many types of system crashes can’t be captured through standard methods, such as storing log information to a hard disk. Operating system crashes and power outages can prevent log files from being properly written or can cause physical damage to the disk—not to mention that these days many embedded systems don’t have hard disks at all. This makes it extremely difficult to analyze the crash and make appropriate changes to prevent future system failures.

The System Logger is a unique device that was designed to solve these types of problems.

“Two types of Batteryless System Loggers are currently in production. One uses a RS232 serial interface for connection to the host system and another uses a USB serial interface,” said Slava Leibenzon, director of Engineering at AMFELTEC Corporation. “Both of them have no batteries or accumulators inside and take power from the host serial interface. This batteryless implementation, together with AMFELTEC Smart Batteryless Backup Technologies, makes the lifetime of the Loggers almost unlimited”.

The Batteryless System Logger is dedicated to the appliance market and embedded system development. It provides a hardware-based, cost-effective logging solution for any computer system located in the office or in the field, and it helps companies deliver reliable and robust products to the market.

The Batteryless System Logger is being showcased in Booth 818 at ITEXPO EAST 2011, in Miami, being held through Friday, Feb. 4.
