Anderson University Picks Meru for Wireless Mobile Learning

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

A good education often requires a good school, and Anderson University, already ranked one of the best universities in the South, has helped make itself even better by deploying a Meru Education-Grade (MEG) wireless solution across its campus.

This deployment stands as part of the Mobile Learning Initiative (MLI) from Anderson University, in which it helps the growth and use of mobile devices across campus to improve the learning experience. Students are issued iPads, and can use “flipped classrooms” to learn in both a traditional classroom setting and on their own time through their mobile devices.

Students can watch lectures, visit a virtual library, and communicate with fellow students and their professors through unified communications suites on their iPads. The devices also serve as a common point of engagement, providing virtual and offline materials to improve the learning experience (and reduce the amount of books students have to carry to each class).

However, that means a powerful network is required to keep up with all the traffic. Fortunately, the MEG solution from Meru provides just that. It consists of a Meru MC4200 controller, Meru AP433 access points, and Meru AP320 and AP320i access points across the campus. The network is monitored by the Meru E(z)RF Network Manager, allowing for full visibility and control.

As a result, all the devices used by students across the campus are reliably and safely connected. The wireless network is fast and supports students coming to campus by day and those who live on-campus, so no one is left with a slow or bad connection.

“Anderson is a leading-edge university, having made great strides to enable advanced, technically diverse teaching leveraging the MEG mobility solution to enable uninterrupted learning,” says Sarosh Vesuna, VP and general manager of Meru’s education business unit. “The increased control that MEG provides IT managers has helped them prioritize residents’ communication requirements and is designed to ensure that their requirements can be met now and in the future.”

Technology has a great role to play in the educational experience, and Anderson University is embracing all the potential that personal devices can provide. Its Mobile Learning Initiative is a wonderful idea, providing students with a unique learning experience that’s a hybrid of in-person lessons and online material. This is made possible thanks to the solution from Meru, keeping the entire campus connected.
