Opengear's CM4148 Console Server Selected by University of Illinois

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Opengear has announced that the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Campus Information Technology and Educational Services (CITES), is using the company’s Opengear CM4148 offering to manage all the equipment in its data center.

Opengear is a provider of next-generation console server and KVM over IP solutions.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the public land-grant institutions and has over 41,000 students, 16 colleges and instructional units and a large public library. The campus network has 70,000 computer connections spread over 130 buildings with 76 percent of classrooms offering wireless connections.

With growth in campus capacity the network, data center and number of servers also grew and there arose a need for an out-of-band management solution. University authorities said that they required an economical, reliable and secure console server for providing high-density serial connectivity in 1U.

“The University of Illinois was an early adopter of the CM4148 and has benefited from a high-density console server at a low cost per port, with the benefits of a broad feature set and a flexible open source platform,” said Todd Rychecky, vice president of sales at Opengear.

“Universities expect maximum up-time and reliability when they are implementing an out-of-band access solution for their students and faculty, Opengear understands this and aims to advance the console server market to provide the best in reliability for mission critical applications,” Rychecky said.
