Comcast Kept Thousands of Debate Attendees Connected at Boca Raton

As Obama and Romney took the podium in the third and final face-off at Lynn University, cable service provider Comcast (News - Alert) Corporation provided the debate attendees with vital access to TV. As the world’s attention was turned to Boca Raton this week, the event attendees relied on the good old television to stay connected to the outside world for latest news, analysis and commentary around the debate. And Comcast was the one to facilitate this vital communication.

It took the university nearly a year to get adequately prepared to face the mammoth task of hosting the third and final presidential debate. The university reportedly invested in a special installation project that helped serve more than 3,000 members of the press from around the world and hordes of attending campaign staffers and government personnel. Supporting more than 160 televisions across the campus and in the temporary structures like tents and trailers, the installation gave the attendees access to television news and entertainment.

Comcast also provided connection to the all-important “Spin Alley,” where reporters interacted with campaign officials and analysts immediately following the debate.

As part of the project, a massive phone bank for reporters was erected in the Lynn gymnasium and televisions dotted the rows of work stations every few feet. In order to ensure reliability of services, a direct fiber link to the University provided access to ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, Fox News, CNN, CSPAN, ESPN (News - Alert) and MSNBC, and Comcast duplicated each high definition channel for redundancy to ensure access reliability. Comcast also staffed the event with onsite technical staff and backup equipment should troubleshooting have been required.

A year ago, the Commission on Presidential Debates declared the name of Lynn University as the host for the important third and final Presidential debate. This time, the debate focuses on foreign policy, a topic of significance to the University which has a multinational student culture. As of spring 2012 had a multinational student body hailing from more than 80 countries and 44 states.

The last twelve months were spent on the preparation for the enormous challenge of accommodating the debate attendees – the President of the United States, Barack Obama, Republican Presidential nominee and former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, members of the Presidential Administration, Democratic and Republican campaign staff, security and thousands of members of the press from around the world.

Comcast, which already provides video services to the campus, came as a natural choice as a cable partner for the university.

In other news, Comcast Corporation reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2012. Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Corporation, said, “The third quarter continues our momentum. Cable's results show real strength in every part of the business, producing sustainable and profitable growth while we expand our product offerings, deliver more innovation and continue to transform the customer experience.”
