Five Popular Apps for Keeping Close Tabs on Election Day

As tomorrow’s votes will ultimately lead to either a new or reinstated President of the United States of America, excitement over both possibilities cannot and will not be dashed by the devastating destruction hurricane Sandy left up and down the East Coast. Regardless of whether you’re red or blue or where you happen to be located tomorrow, there is no doubt you will be turning to your smartphone to provide you will all of the most up-to-date political race statistics.

 Let’s take a look at some of the most popular applications currently on the market that U.S. citizens will be viewing to get a real-time peek into our next commander in chief.

1.       Presidential Election Race 2012

Found in the iTunes store and costing less than a dollar, this application was touted as “the best app for keeping up-to-date with the latest polls, state by state. It is elegantly designed and free of bias," by The Sunday Times. This offering comprises multiple information sources and displays this key information in easy to understand ways including polls depicted in either bar graphs or landscape mode.


2.       The New York Times Election 2012

This innovation designed by yup, you guessed it—The New York Times—offers news, opinions, polls and live election night results from a variety of sources throughout the Web. After downloading the application from either the App store or the Google (News - Alert) Play marketplace, users even have the option to watch videos or slide shows from photographers currently active on the campaign trail.

3.       Vote Planner

Developed by the SunLight Foundation, this application was created with the goal of assisting last minute decision-makers vote for who they feel most passionate about, not solely limited to the presidential race.

Simply enter your address, and you will be provided with an informative guide of sorts that shows all of your available choices on the ballot for your specific city and state. It also highlights the amount of contributions given to each candidate by specific industries as well as endorsements. 


4.       VoterHub

Fresh out from AT&T (News - Alert), this application is powered in conjunction with the Pew Center on the States and Politics 360. Complete with tons of information voters can leverage on Election Day, it encompasses crucial tidbits on how to register to vote in each state, where the nearest polling place is in proximity to each voter, what sample ballots look like, and up-to-date election news from the Associated Press (News - Alert).

5.       Foursquare's I Voted

While this application is managed by the Google Civic Information API, it includes everything you need in order to be looked upon as a model citizen. In addition, it allows users to check in during Election Day to “see America voting in real-time.”

“Connect the ‘I Voted’ app to your Foursquare (News - Alert) account today. You’ll be able to find your polling station and learn about the candidates and propositions that will be on your ballot ahead of time,” according to Foursquare officials. It also is comprised of individual voter ID requirements categorized in an easy-to-use format by each state.

As we can almost hear the silence filling television stations that were once oversaturated with election-related commercials, you will need something to fill this open wound. Use any of these apps and you certainly won’t be disappointed, unless of course, your candidate of choice is the loser. Happy voting!
