Good food, the installation of new officers, the announcement of "Lion of the Year," and a performance by "Dean Martin" were all part of the June 14 meeting of the Union Lions Club.
The meeting, which was held at the Lions Club building at 134 E. Main St., Union, began with a meal before the business and entertainment segments of the evening got underway. The main business of the evening was the installation of new club officers who will serve from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.
The new officers are:
--President Amy Hughes
--1st Vice President Kelli Johnston
--2nd Vice President Wayne Comer
--3rd Vice President Barry O'Dell
--Secretary Bob Holley
--Associate Secretary Barbara Holley
--Treasurer Bob Holley
--Associate Treasurer Barbara Holley
--Director, 1 Year Carolyn Turner, Debbie Greene
--Director, 2 Years Judy Caston, Kathleen Read
--Lion Tamer Sue Keith
Hughes, who has been in the club for five years, previously served as 3rd, 2nd, and 1st vice president. She said she is looking forward to the year ahead and the projects the club will undertake.
"Our national focus this year is on literacy and so we will try and do several projects with the school district and that kind of goes well with me since I'm a school teacher," Hughes said. "I hope to have service projects that will impact the youth as well as the elderly and we also hope to use social media as a form of communications. We are also looking for new members to increase membership.
"We have a great group of people," she said. "I think our club draws from a well-rounded perspective on the community."
When she was installed as president, Hughes was presented with her presidency pin by her predecessor, Outgoing President Sanders Read. She in turn presented Read with a pin signifying that he is a former club president.
After she and her fellow officers were installed, Hughes then presented Read with a statuette of a lion and a plaque featuring a gavel. The statuette was in honor of Read being named Lion of the Year and the plaque honored him for his service as president
With the business portion of the evening was done, it was time for entertainment courtesy of "Dean Martin" aka Wayne Willard. Willard, who impersonates the legendary crooner, put on a show that included tidbits about the singer's career, a story about meeting Martin's daughter and, of course, the songs that Martin a star of the concert stage, TV, motion pictures and Las Vegas. While he sang for his audience, Willard also went out among the assembled Lions and, in a style reminiscent of Martin, serenaded the ladies individually.
