Suddenlink Suffers Email Hosting Outage

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

Recently, customers of Suddenlink found that they were suddenly unable to receive their e-mail when the company’s email hosting system went down on Friday morning.

The email hosting outage affected customers across the nation in the thirteen states it serves. Customers were unable to receive their mail using either Suddenlink’s own Web-based hosting system or third-party e-mail clients. Luckily, the company did in fact restore service the next day, though the company gave no word on what caused the outage.

Customers, on the other hand, have apparently lost their messages, contacts and calendars on the company’s Web-based e-mail hosting system; though Suddenlink said it was working on restoring access soon.

In addition to Internet, Suddenlink also provides cable TV and phone services. Despite the outage, the rest of the company’s Internet, TV and phone services remained unscathed.

The company, officially named Cequel but doing business as Suddenlink, revealed its third quarter financial results in November. Revenues were up by 6.1 percent, attributable to a growth in residential broadband subscriptions, telephone service and advanced video options. Earnings before interests and taxation grew by 7.6 percent.

That same month, the company stated that it would be upping the rates subscribers paid for its services, saying that it needed to do so to upgrade its equipment and improve its services.

“Suddenlink continues to make significant investments in its local network, increasing the number of high-definition TV services and increasing Internet download speeds, among other improvements," Michael Kelemen, director of Government Relations for Suddenlink, said in a statement.

Subscribers will face an increase in rates of around 3.89 percent. Keleman said that rates for programming and equipment had gone up by 8.5 percent, creating the need to pass on the costs to customers. He added that customers could still save money by subscribing to various value packages the company offers however.
