Time to recap the technology headlines this week as we bring the year to a close. Let’s see what happened in the email hosting vertical for this last week of 2012, shall we?
Google will be officially dropping its Sync service, which seems to not bode well for Microsoft (News
- Alert). Why and how, you may wonder?
“It means that people currently using Gmail for free are facing a situation where they might have to degrade their mobile email experience by downgrading to an older protocol that doesn’t sync your calendar or contacts, doesn’t give you direct push of new email messages and doesn’t have all the benefits of Exchange ActiveSync,” said Microsoft’s Dharmesh M. Mehta.
The service will cease functioning as of January 20, 2013, so users have until then to make a decision.

In other news, it looks like email beats social media as a form of marketing, so says the Direct Marketing Association.
According to a recent report, email is more effective for advertising despite social media being a rather popular form of communication. The reason being is retailers and businesses can better cater information in an email as opposed to a blanket campaign via social networking.
Despite the rise in social media, more people use Internet for email over connecting socially, a study from Ipsos in 2012 states, so the report from the DMA makes sense.

“Metalogix Replicator is an integral part of our distributed SharePoint architecture. Everybody needs access to this system,” said Stig Mathiassen, senior information systems manager, SeaBird Exploration.
