ORBCOMM and inthinc Sign Agreement for M2M Communications

By Rahul Arora, TMCnet Contributor

ORBCOMM (News - Alert) Inc., a satellite data communications company focused on two-way M2M communications, recently announced it will provide wireless data services to inthinc Technology Solutions (News - Alert) Inc., a provider of telematics, fleet management and driver safety solutions, for its breakthrough technology applications in the heavy equipment, oil and gas and commercial fleet industries in the U.S.

ORBCOMM provides data communications in even the most remote parts of the world via the company’s network of low-Earth-orbit satellites. They’re constantly in motion around the world to ensure that data gets to clients. They give clients the bandwidth they need for monitoring and alerts without the added cost of broadband or voice.

Best of all: the firm provides two-way communications, so clients can control the data coming from and going back to their device.

“ORBCOMM is pleased to expand inthinc’s communications infrastructure by providing greater flexibility, scalability and coverage options for its data communication needs,” said Brian Bell, ORBCOMM’s executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. “We are poised for the opportunity to provide both cellular and satellite services for inthinc’s leading global telematics applications as we roll out our next generation constellation.”

“We work with some of the largest commercial fleets in the world, and our customers require a solid and cost-effective communications platform to ensure their drivers and mobile assets are safe and productive,” said Kevin Mitchell (News - Alert), vice president of Operations at inthinc. “ORBCOMM’s ubiquitous global network enhances the data transmission infrastructure that supports inthinc’s telematics platform for managing fleet activities in real time.”

In related news, inthinc recently announced that Cintas Corp., a company focusing on specialized business to business services, has used inthinc technology to reduce speeding by 85 percent and decrease vehicle incidents by 46 percent. In an effort to take its Safety Engagement campaign to the next level, the inthinc solution was initially installed in more than 1,200 Cintas vehicles to improve driver performance and reduce vehicle incidents. A more widespread rollout is planned.
