TMCnet Embedded M2M Solutions Week in Review

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

After an invigorating Labor Day weekend, the embedded M2M solutions sector had a handful of noteworthy headlines for us this week.

First up, ProtectCell recruited Brian Rosema, formerly vice president of sales and marketing at Digital Highway Wireless Solutions, as director of M2M business development. This hire comes amid ProtectCell's campaign to hire attractive new talent with the aim of enhancing its technical expertise.

“Brian has a proven track record of being a thought leader in the machine to machine marketplace,” said Scott Mclaren, president and CMO at ProtectCell. “We are pleased to have Brian join ProtectCell and look forward to adding his depth of experience to our strong leadership team.”

Next, Towers Watson and Hughes (News - Alert) Telematics partnered in an effort to bring usage-based insurance programs to market sooner. Each company has its own telematics analytical program already – Towers Watson's DriveAbility and Hughes' In-Drive – and it seems as though the two companies aim to pool their telematics knowledge.

“An effective UBI program should offer valuable vehicle services, as well as the ability to reward dependable drivers,” said Robin Harbage, leader of Towers Watson’s UBI consulting practice. “Working together, Towers Watson and Hughes Telematics bring extensive knowledge to help insurers determine how to best implement a UBI program.”

In other news, Custodia Systems is helping to curb industrial theft by way of its AppelloGEO global tracking system. This system is already protection lots of expensive assets throughout the U.K.

Designed as an improvement over the previous Appello tracker, the AppelloGEO leverages technology from partners such as Vodafone (News - Alert) to integrate mobile and home beacon technologies. The system also features a two-year battery life.

ORBCOMM this week announced that it will provide wireless data services to inthinc Technology Solutions (News - Alert) for the latter company's breakthrough technology applications in the heavy equipment, oil and gas and commercial fleet industries.

ORBCOMM's (News - Alert) low-orbit satellites can provide data communications in even the most remote parts of the world.

“ORBCOMM is pleased to expand inthinc’s communications infrastructure by providing greater flexibility, scalability and coverage options for its data communication needs,” said Brian Bell, ORBCOMM’s executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. “We are poised for the opportunity to provide both cellular and satellite services for inthinc’s leading global telematics applications as we roll out our next generation constellation.”

Lastly, Intelligent Mechatonic Systems added three data analytics partners to its end-to-end usage-based insurance programs. According to the company, additional partners will offer customers greater choice in data insights and intelligence.

The company's UBI programs, among other driver-centric programs and services, are powered by the IMS DriveSync platform. Unlike similar platforms, DriveSync transforms data into true intelligent decision-making information.

That's all for this week in review. Check out the Embedded M2M Solutions Channel for more news in this sector.
