Nokia's NAVTEQ Maps Power Next Generation BMW Navigation System

Nokia (News - Alert) has announced that its Location & Commerce business is supplying global NAVTEQ Maps to power the next generation BMW navigation system.

NAVTEQ (News - Alert) Maps enable navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the globe. BMW is using the NAVTEQ Map data that is needed for ADAS applications, including power management based on height data and speed profiles and the Eco Pro Route application, according to company officials.

“NAVTEQ Maps powered the first navigation system on the European market which was introduced by BMW in the early 1990s - and our relationship has continued throughout the extraordinary development and expansion of the location space,” said Bruno Bourguet, senior vice president of sales and business development at Nokia Location & Commerce.

Today, the company’s goal is to understand and anticipate driver needs and demands and deliver the right products at the right time, Bourguet said, adding that it has the content, platform and services available to support BMW as the company continues to innovate.

Leveraging a range of NAVTEQ Map content, Eco Pro Route selects routes that reduce fuel consumption, eliminating congestion and steep hills. Moreover in order to highlight key road conditions ahead, data such as historical speed patterns, traffic signals, stop signs, driver alerts, bends and slopes is used, said company officials.

Company officials said that drivers can minimize the number of stops due to advance warning. In addition, they can also drive more smoothly at the most fuel efficient speeds.

Launching on the BMW 7-series, the new system is expected to introduce drivers to new features and content including visual guides such as Enhanced 3D City Models and Motorway Junction Objects; and the BMW's Eco Pro Route

Recently, Nokia said that its Location & Commerce business is supplying NAVTEQ Maps and data to the Volkswagen Group for its new Discover Media and Discover Pro infotainment systems.
