It's certainly no secret that the M2M market is growing ever bigger, led by the consumer electronics and telematics sectors – at least, that's what a recent study from Juniper Research has predicted, putting M2M and embedded devices shipments at 400 million by the end of 2017. As such, it should come as no surprise that Telit Wireless Solutions, a major provider of M2M modules and services, has released a new LTE (News - Alert) module for the European and North American OEM and aftermarket automotive segments.
The module, called the LE920, was designed in the new 920 form factor, measuring 34 x 40 x 2.8mm on a 198-pad LGA automotive-grade package. Furthermore, it is capable of delivering 100 Mbps on the downstream and 50 Mbps on the upstream on LTE networks, while also being compatible with DC-HSPA+, offering up to 42 Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up.
Of course, the LE920 also offers GSM/GPRS and EDGE connectivity for network access even while out of 3G/4G network coverage, while its high-performance multi constellation GPS plus GLONASS receiver enables location and direction capabilities.
It is also fully voice compatible, with full duplex PCM as well as analog input and output for hands-free functionality.
The real differentiator of the LE920, however, is its Rx diversity, which allows the end device to be equipped with two separate cellular antennas for greater quality and reliability of wireless connectivity in areas not conducive to optimal signal.
"The LE920 is Telit's new high-performance automotive product which also introduces to the market our new form factor for this segment. One which provides our R and D and product management teams with lots of space for future integration of new and valuable features and resources for our automotive customers," said Dominikus Hierl, chief marketing officer at Telit Wireless (News - Alert) Solutions.
Other features of the LE920 include USB 2.0 connectivity, an eCall system for quick emergency response and an extended operational temperature range – from -40 degrees F to +185 degrees Fahrenheit.
The LE920 builds upon Telit's extensive experience building wireless M2M modules, with models such as the HE910 offering similar wireless functionality.
