Securus Provides M2M Solutions for the Entire Family; Even Fido!

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Managing Editor

People spend billions of dollars every year to protect their loved ones. Whether they are buying driving lessons for their teenagers, medical treatments for their grandparents or the latest safety gadgets for the furry members of the family, Americans put safety and security at the forefront of their buying decisions. That’s why Securus GPS decided to focus on M2M solutions that can help ensure the safety of every member of your family, even your beloved puppy.

Recently, Chris Newton, president and CEO of Securus, sat down with TMC (News - Alert) to discuss his company’s history, its position in the space and its future. He pointed out that Securus was incorporated in 2008, and its first product was SpotLite, a GPS solution to help owners keep track of their pets. Since then, the company has expanded its product lines, taking special care to focus on the needs of families.

Knowing that people spend billions on fixed home security solutions, Securus decided to enable customers to use M2M technology outside of the home. Now that these M2M solutions are less expensive and more prevalent, they are available to everyone. For this reason, Securus created a platform that can support almost any use of the technology, building middleware for use on different platforms, whether as a Web application or a new Android (News - Alert) version.

In addition to the SpotLite application, Securus boast several other offerings. The company has a product called eZoom, which is designed for cars and is useful for monitoring teen drivers. It also offers eCare+Voice, a mobile medical alarm system that alerts emergency call centers and emergency responders in the event of an accident.

The most recent development from Securus is the creation of an Android app, which now joins the existing iPhone and BlackBerry (News - Alert) apps to make these solutions available on most mobile devices. The footprint is now also available in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.  The new mobile app can receive text messages when certain conditions are met, such as when teen drivers leave the house or when they are going too fast. Newton states that the solutions are a click away from being real-time.

As for the future, Newton says that the company plans to take advantage of every M2M innovation as far as hardware is concerned, making offerings smaller and with better battery life. The company also prides itself on polling customers and the market to see what features people – and perhaps Fido himself – are looking for.
