Trimble Helps Fleet Managers Go Green and Cut Costs

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Managing Editor

Sometimes, in business, we feel we have to make difficult decisions. Do we focus on serving our existing customers or try to acquire new ones? Do we opt for a public or a private cloud? Can we save money and still be environmentally responsible? In most cases, however, these are not mutually exclusive choices, and businesses can achieve both goals at the same time. This is especially true when considering fleet management technology, as solutions from providers such as Trimble (News - Alert) can help companies save money and the environment at the same time.

I recently spoke with Jim Reynolds of Trimble about how machine to machine technology can help fleet managers cut costs and go green. Reynolds notes that fleet expenses can be quite large and, for companies that decide to move beyond a mere “track and trace” solution, there are many ways to save money with telematics.

Companies can reduce idle time and fuel consumption, and perform proactive vehicle maintenance. These solutions can also help workers be more effective. For example, it can help ensure that a technician has the right tools in his or her van and that he or she has the proper skill set for a particular job.

At the same time, fleet management technology can help companies reduce their adverse environmental impact. Fuel efficiency, for example, saves money but also reduces emissions. Also, repairing a vehicle in a timely fashion can help it run more efficiently, also reducing pollution. Telematics can improve efficiency, reducing technician revisits, for example, which waste fuel and money. As Reynolds points out, the path to “greening” the fleet is the same one that leads to cost savings, so companies can be frugal and environmentally responsible at the same time.

On the other hand, there can be challenges involved with implementing fleet management technology. Reynolds stated that, for the most part, it requires a change in thinking. Companies need to adopt the new technology and move away from their established ways of operating in order to embrace the changes.

Speaking of changes, Reynolds feels that the technology that Trimble provides can really change the future of the industry. He envisions a world where drivers never get lost, where fleet managers always know where their vehicles are, and where technicians always have the right tools for the job. And, he says, that future is not very far away…
