The application enablement platform market is big business and highly profitable; just ask ILS Technology and Axeda Corporation.

In the latest Competitive Assessment by ABI Research (News - Alert), ILS Technology topped the list as the most popular Application Enablement Platform (AEP) vendor, followed closely by Axeda Corporation.

The assessment analysis is based on the market share that vendors have among six other criteria. ILS Technology and Axeda (News - Alert) both have an impressively long list of customers throughout the world. ILS has made significant ground with an industry-leading score of 81 in the innovation category, according to the assessment analysis.

This high score was enough to secure the top spot overall for ILS.

Axeda, on the other hand, took the second position based on its market share that earned it in excess of $20 million in revenues in 2011.

ILS innovations have particularly touched on its platform integration with existing ERP/CRM systems, which has been crucial to its success. The ILS platform uses the deviceWISE module which enables direct interfacing to industry databases like Salesforce, SAP (News - Alert) and Oracle. This ERP/CRM integration is increasingly important as it leverages information from connected devices allowing for optimization and improved efficiency of business processes.

deviceWISE connects intelligent devices to each other, helping organizations make business decisions based on real-time data. It decreases installation and maintenance costs and supports device-to-device, device-to-database and device-to-application communication. It is available as a piece of software onto a server, as a gateway device connected to devices, or as an embedded agent loaded onto devices directly.

It also supports a wide range of other connectivity options across many different platforms.

ThingWorx was also recognized as a company to watch in the future in the AEP market. Some of its innovative tools include SQUEAL and Mashup Builder, which would particularly boost its portfolio to prospective customers.

A total of eight companies were rated in the Competitive Assessment vendor list.
