Ericsson Helps Volvo Launch Connected Car Concept in Volvo Cars

Volvo Group and Ericsson (News - Alert) have collaborated to launch the connected car concept in Volvo cars. The cloud-based connected vehicle on Ericsson’s multiservice delivery platform will be delivering infotainment, apps and communication services in the new Volvo cars.

According to the partnership conditions, Ericsson will perform systems integration of the solution with Volvo Car Group IS/IT environments and in-vehicle systems. Ericsson is expected to provide managed services for a global cloud solution featuring a secure connection between the vehicle, content providers and others.

Lex Kerssemakers, SVP Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars said, “We clearly see that cars in the near future will integrate the same level of digital services that consumers today are used to have in their homes or at work. This is a strategically important part of Volvo's investments for the future where we intend to take a leading position.”

The MSDP allows the download of high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video. Also, Volvo Cars will make parts of the platform available to other companies in the automotive industry eco-system.

The Volvo car group will be leveraging the connected vehicle cloud to allow drivers, passengers and the car to connect to services in the cloud. People in the vehicle can access information, navigation instructions and entertainment from a screen positioned in the car.

Content providers can deliver content to Volvo cars by drawing agreements with Volvo, Internet radio providers, road authorities, governments, toll-road operators and others.

Per Borgklint, head of business unit support systems, Ericsson, remarked, “This partnership is evidence of the transformation across our entire society as we move into the Networked Society. Drivers want services that technology makes possible, in real time and in the context that fits them personally. Our skills in System Integration and Service Enablement will match Volvo’s strategy.”

Recently, MTN South Africa launched a commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) network with the help of Ericsson. The network is the first to be built by Ericsson in Africa and boosts MTN’s (News - Alert) competitive profile, where Vodacom and Cell C already offer LTE services.
