Embedded M2M Solutions Week in Review

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

It was a fairly busy week for the embedded M2M solutions space that saw a lot of focus on the connected car segment. Here’s a look at some of the top stories.

First up, ZTE (News - Alert) introduced its new Car Mode application for its Android devices. The technology, created in partnership with Nuance Communications (News - Alert), essentially brings advanced voice applications to ZTE Android devices worldwide. In particular, the app leverages Nuance’s voice recognition technology to provide an eyes- and hands-free mobile experience, complete with voice-enabled navigation and music control.

In other vehicle-related news, connected vehicle services provider Airbiquity has partnered with Baidu to deliver connected car Internet services to the Chinese automotive market. Under the agreement, Airbiquity will integrate Baidu’s Internet services — including its Map, Send-to-Vehicle and Music Service capabilities — into its Choreo private cloud connected vehicle services platform and Driver Experience.

Also this week, NYC-based luxury bath and beauty products company Sabon has decided to modernize its processes using technology geared toward enhancing the customer experience. In particular, the company has partnered with AppCard and Sprint to track real-time customer interactions and buying trends, increasing the average number of items sold per transaction by 20 percent over the past nine months.

Meanwhile, Swiss mobile module and chip provider u-blox (News - Alert) introduced its new TOBY-L2 and MPCI-L2 modem series, a line of ultra-compact LTE (News - Alert) modules with UMTS/HSPA+ and GSM/EDGE, GPRS fallback. The goal with this modem series, according to u-blox CEO Thomas Seiler, is to meet customer requirements for embedded connectivity. Modules in this series support multi-band LTE-FDD, as well as HSPA+ and GPRS/EDGE in a compact LGA package.

Lastly, IoT company Neul introduced its new two-way, wide-area networking solution for the Internet of Things. Called NeulNET, this new system is based on the Weightless open standard and manages to outdo current-gen GPRS, 3G, CDMA and LTE WAN-based solutions in key areas such as coverage, battery life, module cost and simplicity of operation.

That about does it for this week, but you can always head over to the Embedded M2M Solutions channel for more news in the space.
