Embedded M2M Solutions Week in Review

By Steve Anderson, Contributing TMCnet Writer

It's been another big week for embedded machine to machine (M2M) solutions this week, and as machines become increasingly able to communicate with other machines—not to mention with the users of same—that poses more opportunity than ever. But which opportunities are best for each business? Getting to the bottom of that is no small order, so with the weekend afoot, it's a good time to put on another cup of coffee, catch your breath, and settle in because we're ready to help by covering the biggest events of the week in our Week in Review coverage!

First we had a look at the Samsung Digital Health Initiative (SDHI), an open hardware platform—as well as an open software platform—that is set to drive development of healthcare products and give regular users more tools to help better keep track of the users' health. It's geared to be a starting point for things like wearable technology that can track heart rates and blood pressure and the like, as well as for future developments that are as yet less clear. A big part of the SDHI is the recently-unveiled Simband, meant to be a reference design for other developers.

Next, we had a look at RxSafe's new RxASP, a breed of prescription packaging system that incorporates RFID tags running at 13.56 MHz in order to help counter potential mistakes in storing and dispensing medication. The system contains a set of canisters arranged in almost honeycomb style, each with a particular medical loadout. The system can then drop the various loadouts into individual strips, which it then seals to form a kind of pouch, giving the system its name, the automated strip processor (ASP).

Distrix brought out our next bit of news, introducing availability for the Distrix 4.1 network virtualization software system. The new version of Distrix allows for both software-defined networking (SDN) and third-party controller applications to get in on Distrix's network notifications, and the RESTful API can allow such systems to bring in changes faster and more smoothly. Meanwhile, the Tunnel Policy engine allows for rule extensions in points like network asset control systems and intrusion detection systems.

Then we had a look at Iridium Communications' SkyBitz as a Service (SBS), which got a further boost from Iridium (News - Alert) as the company planned to include satellite connectivity for SkyBitz in its normal operation. With the added satellite connectivity, SBS gets a significantly boosted range, and allows its users a much more accurate means to track assets regardless of where those assets may be found, as well as the ability to track trends related to those assets.

Finally, it was big news for the industry as TMC (News - Alert) announced that the 10th Annual INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award Applications were now open. The award is designed to recognize the companies that deliver the best in the field when it comes to Internet protocol (IP) communications products, and for those who want in on the hunt for one of these awards, companies will need to provide a set of case studies showing how those who used the product in question benefited from the use of the product. Applications are due July 3, 2014.

That was the week that was in embedded M2M solutions, and clearly, it was a big week. Our global online community had its hands full bringing back all the latest news to show off the possibility inherent in this rapidly-changing field. So be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest news in this sector, and every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
