Embedded M2M Solutions Week in Review

By Jonathan Keane, Contributing Writer

As more companies from Apple to Sprint (News - Alert) and Tesla to Google attempt to hook up the connected car and gain the biggest market share, this week TMC’s Rob Enderle broke down the different offerings that some of these companies have out or are working on to get one step ahead of the competition. We examine what each company is up to and in particular look at how Tesla has now set the bar for the cars of the future.

Sticking with the cars of the future, this week ID Systems (News - Alert) patented a new platform for recording and reporting auto accidents. Vehicle Management System (VMS) is currently in its early stages and for now will only be used in industrial trucks and rental cars but it lays the ground for expansion. “In the VMS market, reducing the risks and costs of industrial truck accidents is often a key factor in our customers' return on investment, and we include impact management as a standard feature in our VMS implementations,” said the company upon announcing the patent.

GE and cloud computing developer Pivotal have announced that they will be working with a variety of different industries to help them manage big data a little better and more efficiently. GE claims its predictive software can transform industry from aviation to rail or public services like hospitals.

Finally, “the mobile revolution is shaking up companies in just about every industry”. That’s according to TMC’s (News - Alert) Mae Kowalke, who analyzed the details from new reports published by Pyramid Research this week. In particular, the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) sphere is growing with a 10 percent growth expected in 2016, says Pyramid. Meanwhile a Capacity Magazine (News - Alert) prediction puts the annual enterprise revenue for MVNOs at $120 million by 2016, a 33 percent jump since 2011. Read more about the research.
