Lenexa, Kan., is home to a company packing a fairly substantial fleet of vehicles to its credit, C&C Group. C&C Group offers up facilities, services and a fleet of 75 trucks and service vans, working to help other companies set up security systems, fire protection systems, and other automated systems that help keep businesses running. But when C&C Group got a look at the Geotab system through Sprint (News - Alert), a new opportunity became clear, and C&C Group eagerly brought in the new tools to great effect.
One of the biggest problems that C&C Group had was figuring out just where those 75 trucks and service vans were at any given time, as well as how the vehicles were being driven, and even what kinds of maintenance were required on said vehicles. Fleet management, really, was the name of the game, and for C&C Group, it was a lot of guesswork. But trying out the Geotab system—it put the devices in question into just six vehicles—showed C&C Group how the information it desired could be generated by just a series of devices available on a plug-and-play basis.
Almost immediately, improvements were visible. Unnecessary idling dropped. Engine diagnostics improved and problems—even potential problems—could be caught and addressed before becoming major problems. Driver behaviors like improved seat belt use and the like were also shored up, and now, the company expects to reduce its overall gasoline consumption by around 2,000 gallons annually. Though gas prices change with alarming rapidity, this should save the company an average of about $7,000 a year. Reduced gas consumption also offers environmental benefits, as the company found that it removed 23,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the environment as well. It even had a positive benefit on morale, getting the drivers more engaged and seeing that said drivers could have an impact on the company's fortunes by reducing idling and the like.
Sprint's connection to C&C Group didn't stop there, though, as Sprint also brought in 129 mobile devices—a combination of iPhones and Samsung (News - Alert) Galaxy S5 units—as well as 57 hotspots for the business, which boasts 135 employees to its credit. With the new tools in question, the drivers were better able to stay connected to the central office, and gave C&C Group the tools it needed to produce a truly mobile workforce.
With these tools in place, C&C Group shows us how the right combination of technology and an engaged workforce can produce not only quality results, but also direct cash savings. Sometimes, it's hard to justify making a decision in business on the strength of amorphous, vague benefits like improving quality or making workers more engaged, but what C&C Group shows us is what kind of direct bottom-line impact these otherwise vague measures can have. Additionally, there's a clear value here in the functions of fleet management and how machine to machine (M2M) communications tools like Sprint's Geotab can offer the necessary information to spot and fix problems as well as find better ways to carry out business, reducing costs and improving profit.
Naturally, not every company will produce these results; some will do much better, while others won't reduce costs that appreciably. But for those who try it, it's likely to prove a positive overall net venture.
