Kool Smiles' Future Shines like a Perfect Set of Pearly Whites
By Tabitha Naylor
Earlier today, Talari Networks (News - Alert), a leading innovator in WAN reliability and performance quality network appliances, announced that the company’s Mercury WAN appliances have been deployed by Kool Smiles, a national provider of dental care. Talari is now providing Kool-Smiles with low-cost broadband links with MPLS capabilities.
Kool Smiles' mission is to provide high-quality dental care for families in underserved communities. The company’s success depends on using technology to ensure excellent quality care while simultaneously cutting down on the costs of service across its 130 remote office locations and centralized data center, as well as administrative and call center locations nationwide.
Although Kool Smiles had a carrier-class T1 MPLS network in place that was available 99.8 percent of the time, office staff and patients experienced poor application performance, slow file sharing, intermittent and chronic T1 outages that sometimes lasted for days, and dropped VoIP (Voice Over IP) calls.
Without more advanced technology to provide much more granular QoS, the company couldn't meet their internal SLAs, which were 99.9+ percent. To aggregate bandwidth for bursting, and to seamlessly and instantly move network traffic between circuits, Kool Smiles was faced with the challenge of spreading the network across multiple carrier circuits for more robust QoS capability.
With Talari's quality and performance capabilities and by adding low-cost broadband connections to the existing MPLS links, Kool Smiles has now achieved a more granular QoS than standard carrier-class QoS, which benefits patients and the organization as a whole.
"The QoS capabilities of Talari's appliances are much more sophisticated and responsive than single-source MPLS. Our VoIP traffic is the most critical on our network since we process tens of thousands of calls daily," said Kool Smiles' Chief Technical Architect Mark Blomquist.
He concluded by stating that with Talari, VoIP calls never go down, even in the case of network failure, thereby ensuring an 'always-on' high quality VoIP calling experience.
