Apigee Introduces New API Management Solution Optimized for SDN Architectures

Apigee recently developed a new version of the API platform, optimized specifically for Software-Defined Networking (SDN) environments. The latest offering from Apigee brings required API management capabilities for building, managing and scaling-up of applications to the programmable data center.

SDN technology essentially focuses on reducing existing physical boundaries on switches, routers and controllers via robust APIs, thereby driving network performance and resource efficiency, as well as human resource efficiency, and capital expense efficiency.

"Software-defined networking is creating an important new era of networking innovation that will be defined and driven by APIs,” said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. “The ecosystem of apps being built around SDN -- everything from simple task automation to advanced control logic and network management -- will create more agile, efficient, flexible and robust networking configurations."

Apigee's SDN solution features embeddable API management software for SDN controller providers and a standalone platform supporting network management, integration and analytics. Networking providers will now be able to simplify programmability and management of their SDN controllers, while data center operators easily develop analytics-based network policies managing heterogeneous SDNs.

The elimination of complexities surrounding hardware layering of modern networks allows the introduction of new capabilities for enhancing performance of the networks, developing route data based on business requirements and Internet-scale application communication. Thus, by introducing advanced API management and analytics capabilities, Apigee makes it possible for data centers to address shifts in demand for specific applications and optimize their network resources, routes and API services.

The new API management solution includes the embeddable API management software and a stand-alone API platform designed for multi-vendor SDN network integration and analytics. The embeddable API management software from Apigee simplifies the programming and management of the SDN controller software, and ensures greater control, increased visibility and analytics of apps based on their Northbound APIs.

The standalone API platform, which combines network management systems and SDN controllers from multiple vendors, supports network analytics and improved policy execution on the controller, and allows network-based programs to change network behavior based on trends and demands.
