Wilden Pump Uses Riverbed and Veeam Solutions to Backup Data to Amazon S3

Wilden Pump has picked Riverbed (News - Alert) Technology and Veeam Software solutions for securely backing up data to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).

The combination of Riverbed Whitewater appliances and Veeam’s backup and replication v6 solution enable the completion of backup procedures to the cloud in one step. This helps Wilden Pump to reduce storage requirements significantly, while making it easy to manage backup operations.

As the storage need is minimized, Wilden Pump will be able to save a lot in cloud storage fees while enhancing the efficiency of disaster recovery (DR) processes and data protection.

Wilden Pump specializes in backing up data from its site, as its parent company PSG operates several global pump brands, each with own DR and storage processes that the company integrated into a common IT infrastructure. Since backup data grows at a rate of one terabyte per year, the storage team faced several hurdles as they were using disk-to-disk-to-tape backup method.

The recovery of data from tape is a laborious process, taking several days or even weeks.

To accommodate this huge data, Wilden Pump selected the Amazon S3 cloud for backup as it is cost-effective and scalable, offering easy access to back up at an offsite location. And with 95 percent virtualization of Wilden Pump servers, backup took two hours each day to get a virtual machine (VM) image backup and another regular backup at the client OS level.

Whitewater appliances with Veeam backup and replication solutions enabled easy cloud-based backup, which also helped manage data growth effectively.

Jeff Rountree, global network manager at PSG said, “For Wilden Pump, the Whitewater appliances reduced cloud storage requirements seven times and Veeam made virtual backups a simple one-step process. The previous disk-to-disk-to-tape backup method did not protect our data well and didn’t automatically off-site replication of backups. Also, tape backup may cause a company to lose part of a week’s data depending on the time of the last backup.”

In related company news, Riverbed Technology recently demonstrated its solutions for transforming the data center at Gartner Data Center Conference 2012. The demo included speeding applications and data over corporate networks, accelerating physical and cloud-based disaster recovery (DR) and ensuring network and application availability, performance and security.
