3M Debuts Portfolio of Passive Optical LAN Solutions for the Enterprise
By Shamila Janakiraman
3M (News - Alert) released a new portfolio of Passive Optical LAN Solutions for the enterprise LAN. The 3M POLS portfolio will ensure a complete, end-to-end fiber solution for the enterprise. 3M serves customers in the telecommunications industry by connecting and optimally protecting their infrastructure.
According to officials, fiber-to-the-desktop LAN technology is best suited as an alternative to traditional copper-based Layer 2 Ethernet switches. This makes Passive Optical LAN popular among government and enterprise LAN customers owing to the huge cost benefits and savings.
About 70 percent reduction of equipment and a reduction of up to 80 percent are made possible in power costs. This is because active components are not required on every floor in the telecom room. Also 90 percent less space and material is required in such deployments.
POLS provides converged high bandwidth services and eliminates the need for any active electronic devices to be installed between the main equipment room and the work are, as only one single mode fiber is used in networking it is further beneficial.
The the energy requirements of POLS is less since there is fewer pieces of equipment used, as compared to traditional enterprise Ethernet LAN switches that are deployed over 100 Ohm Category copper twisted pair media. Hence, the solution becomes an economical business solution.
3M Passive Optical LAN Solutions portfolio of products feature high-performance fiber cable; innovative one pass fiber pathways for below-the-ceiling; revolutionary field terminated fiber connectors; wall and rack mount fiber distribution systems; optimized splitter modules and shelves.
At BICSI (News - Alert) Winter Conference and Exhibition 3M announced an expansion of its fiber connector product line for fast, on-site installation in the enterprise. With one-piece, pre-assembled designs, the newest fiber connectors from 3M are engineered to be field terminated, providing a completely customizable and reliable, mechanical connectivity solution.
The 3M Communication Markets Division strives to connect smart grids to smart phones, wind farms to server farms, greenfield to brownfield and wireline to wireless. 3M is enhancing networks further advancing xDSL and FTTN to the enterprise.
