Aircel, a part of Maxis Communications Berhad (News - Alert), Malaysia and a telecom player with pan-India operations, has partnered with Facebook, a social site with over 500 million users around the world, to introduce Facebook (News - Alert) Voice Updates on Aircel. Officials with Aircel claimed that for the first time, the facility lets people connect to their family and friends on Facebook in their own voice, even without Internet access on their mobile phones, which makes it an easy access for a large audience anytime anywhere.

Company officials said that the product, which is easy-to-use, opens a world of possibilities for all to connect, share and socialize in a quick and more personal manner.

Moreover, Facebook Voice Updates on Aircel (News - Alert) does not require access to mobile Internet, which makes it more user- friendly and provides larger access. “At Aircel it is our constant endeavor to innovate and bring the best to the consumer which enables the consumer to better his lifestyle and live smart,” said Gurdeep Singh, COO of Aircel, in a statement.

Singh said that convergence is the way forward as it opens a world of possibilities. Facebook Voice Updates on Aircel is a step in that direction, which helps both the business community and the youth to connect efficiently, be it a celebration or an emergency.

“It is an honor indeed to be working with Facebook and making this possible for the very first time,” he added.Henri Moissinac, head of mobile business at Facebook, said that today, over 15 million people are actively using Facebook in India, where mobile devices are an important tool for Indians to stay connected to the people and things most important to them.

“This collaboration with Aircel will offer an opportunity for our Indian users to easily connect and share with their friends on Facebook anytime, anywhere,” said Moissinac.

TMCnet in December reported that ZTE Corporation, a global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has won an $85 million UMTS contract with India’s Aircel to build and deploy an advanced SDR-based 3G network for the pan-India mobile service provider.

Officials with ZTE (News - Alert) Corporation said that as the long-term partner and supplier of GSM networks for Aircel, the company will be also responsible for its 2G network upgrade and implementing the new 3G network and subsequent upgrades.
