TMCnet Fixed Mobile Convergence Week in Review

From high level studies looking at market trends to industry milestones and support for the proliferating population of smartphones, this week was crammed with interesting developments.

First, the survey results:

  • TMCnet Contributing Editor Gary Kim, focused on the recently released In-State study that found small business spending on wireless services will exceed spending on fixed-network voice for the first time in 2012. Wireless services will become the single-largest category of small business spending, bigger than broadband access or fixed-line voice.
  • In-Stat (News - Alert) also is out with a new research report, titled “3D on Mobile Technology: Processors, Image Sensors, and Displays Drive the 3D Experience.”  It states that 3D mobile devices will surpass 148 million in 2015.
  • Motorola (News - Alert) Solutions, Inc. recently released a study, entitled “The Motorola Solutions 2011 Hospitality Market Barometer, “highlighting the importance of IT spending.  
  • TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan, featured the results of a report from Ericsson that Turkcell’s 3G exchanges have been ranked first in terms of data download speed.
  • SpectorSoft, a provider of computer, mobile device and Internet monitoring and analysis software, announced that its new survey gives insights into the top concerns of parents related to their children's mobile phone use during this school season.
  • In its latest report, titled, “Enterprise Performance Series: Policy, Governance and Security,” AOMTP focused on the significance - and potential business outcomes - of having an effective wireless policy in place.


In regards to convergence, smartphones and mobile payments, not surprisingly there was a lot of activity and industry buzz:

  • Crowdmug, a location based, open commerce platform that allows users to access real-time visual updates of places, announced the launch of on-demand visual updates app for iPhone (News - Alert).
  • Parkmobile USA has partnered with Premier Parking to implement its new pay by phone service at Premier Parking surface lots in and around the downtown Nashville, TN area using the Internet and a native mobile app now available for iPhone, Adroid and Blackberry platforms.
  • As schools reopen, Sprint wants  to help students by offering smartphones and affordable Everything Data plans — unlimited data, and access to thousands of applications.
  • Admeris, provider of secure wide-area wireless transaction software solutions partnered with Global Transaction Services Group (GTSG) Inc. GTSG will represent the PCI-compliant secure OneTouch mobile payment platform from Admeris.
  • Thrupoint announced its Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) collaboration software for iPhone.
  • Nestle's Hjem-IS deployed Paperlinks QR Code Platform to drive a new marketing campaign during the Tour Of Denmark international cycling event. Hjem-IS handed out coupons with custom Paperlinks QR code scannable by iPhone and other bar code reading smartphones.  
  • TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan reported on RIM unveiling  BlackBerry Management Center to Protect Smartphone Content. This is a free cloud-based service for small businesses to protect business-related content stored on the handsets. 
  • ChaCha, a mobile answers service is currently reaching out to U.K. tech-savvy web-based workers needed to serve as “Guides” in their free time and provide information to all U.K. users who need fast answers to questions, while they are on the go.

As mentioned, hitting milestones new solutions introductions were also features this week:

  • TMCnet Contributor Calvin Azuri reported on Convergys announcing  they have implemented the state-of-the-art Convergys Smart Revenue Solution for the Telekom Deutschland's wireline subscribers.
  • Supportcomm, one of Brazil's largest providers of managed data services, announced that it has sought the services of Motricity to help in the expansion of its mobile services platform in the Latin American region. 
  • AirPatrol Corp., recently introduced a new mobile monitoring and policy enforcement technology, called ZoneDefense.
  • ZyXEL Communications (News - Alert), launched its new Aerobeam WirelessHD device, ZyXEL's Aerobeam WHD6215. Featuring a transmitter/receiver combo, it enables consumers to place their devices anywhere in the room to wirelessly stream digital content and is optimized for wirelessly streaming HD multimedia.

TMCnet contributing editors featured developments from around the world. These included:

  • Wilson Electronics (News - Alert) asking its customers and all signal booster advocates to speak out against US cellular service providers’ recent proposal that would force replacement of all signal boosters currently in operation.
  • Globility Communications Corporation’s $15.2 million sale of its 3.5 GHz fixed wireless spectrum licenses in 29 rural and urban markets across Canada to Primus Telecommunications Group.
  • El Paso County in Texas decision to deploy the onBoard Mobile Gateway to improve situational awareness  for its Enhanced 911 Emergency Communications District.

And finally, it is also worth taking a look at the feature by TMCnet Special Guest Rich Novak, North American President for Micro Focus. He highlights how his company’s solutions for regression testing are helping iPass, a leading provider of enterprise mobility services, in enabling enterprise to overcome the mounting challenges of supporting new operating system versions, languages and network service partnerships.
