TMCnet Fixed Mobile Convergence Week in Review

By Peter Bernstein, Senior Editor

Given the daily gloom surrounding the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, it seems appropriate to start the week in review with good news. Market research aggregator companiesandmarkets.com, recently offered a study, “Mobile Broadband in Western Europe,” by Comparison Markets that predicts robust growth over the next five years driven by smartphone and tablet growth and an explosion in applications to run on them.

In other  market news TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan detailed  the recently released study by digital measurement and business analytics provider comScore (News - Alert). Its MobiLens service highlights the key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending July 2011.

Also in the U.S, The National Safety Council has announced the launch of a series of short educational videos, titled, “Understanding Distracted Driving,” which features frequently asked questions about using cell phone while driving.  The free video is available for download on YouTube (News - Alert).

In contract and partnership news, September has started with a flourish:

  • Looking to provide its Engineering and Carrier Management teams enterprise-wide visibility to actionable information, Allied Wireless Communications Corporation (AWCC) has chosen netCLARUS from Connectiv Solutions, the company has announced.
  • Avantica Technologies, provider of software engineering services for start-ups and established software companies, announced its partnership with Rover Apps to help support the Rover mobile enterprise application platform (MEAP).
  • NDS announced the launch of its next generation digital rights management (DRM) solution for multi-platform pay-TV, VideoGuard Connect.
  • TMCnet Contributor Mae Kowalke featured an article on Cotendo and how efficient delivery is key to boosting mobile app performance that included an interview with Cotendo General Manager of Mobile, Shlomi Gian.

In other industry news, Novatel Wireless (News - Alert), a provider of intelligent wireless networking solutions, announced its distribution agreement with ACAL BFi, a division of Acal, a pan-European technical distributor, for covering the U.K., Italy and Germany.   Airband Communications (News - Alert), a provider of fixed-wireless voice and data services to businesses in the U.S., signed an agreement with Boston-based ABRY Partners, LLC, to provide $20 million in financing to further Airband's growth.

Last but certainly not least, ThruPoint is offering those interested a complimentary Exhibit's Pass, allowing them to register and visit the company's booth #308 at TMCnet’s ITEXPO West 2011 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, September 12-15.

We hope you are planning on attending, and look forward to seeing you there and at the ThruPoint booth.
