Sierra Wireless (News - Alert), a provider of mobile broadband network solutions, is developing a high-speed mobile broadband device with industry collaboration.
Sierra, in collaboration with Telstra, Qualcomm (News - Alert) and Ericsson, is developing the first wireless data devices for the HSPA+ standard, also known as HSPA Evolution (eHSPA).
The new device is capable of offering peak download speeds of 21 megabits per second (Mbps) over Telstra’s (News - Alert) Next G network, which according to Sierra, is three times faster than that offered by currently available HSPA modems.
The HSPA+ standard reduces latency and provides larger bandwidth capacity, offering support to more data-intensive applications including video downloads.
Telstra is on track to roll out the new technology to Next G wireless network by the end of this year. In February, Telstra had announced its plans to upgrade the Next G network to peak network downlink speeds of 21 Mbps by year-end.
The enhanced Next G network would enable Telstra to provide an unrivalled broadband experience to its customers on the move, said Ross Fielding, executive director, Telstra Product Management.
“Working with our partners, Sierra Wireless, Qualcomm and Ericsson (News - Alert), we are developing the world's first 21Mbps capable mobile broadband device, which will take advantage of the speed, coverage and capabilities of the Next G network,” Fielding said.
Jim Kirkpatrick, CEO for Sierra Wireless, thinks HSPA+ technology will improve the way people experience mobile broadband, and it will open the door for new, higher bandwidth applications.
“Telstra has shown tremendous industry leadership in delivering leading mobile broadband technology first in the world, and we are thrilled to work with other key industry leaders like Qualcomm and Ericsson to support this initiative,” Kirkpatrick said.
Sierra Wireless’ modem and software solutions have been used by mobile broadband networks around the world. The company recently announced a high-value third generation (3G) Ethernet gateway, AirLink (News - Alert) Raven XE, to provide enterprise customers with round-the-clock unmanned operation of remote assets and high-speed broadband connectivity for wireless transaction processing and data transfer.
Shipments of the new device for customer trials are expected to begin in coming months, with a commercial launch to follow, Sierra said.
