China Telecom Corp Picks Nortel for Wireless Network Project

China Telecommunications Corporation (CTC), China's largest state-owned mobile network operator, has selected Nortel (News - Alert) to deploy CDMA network in seven provinces.

 
CTC provides telecom and information services including voice, data, image and multimedia in 21 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China, with about 210 million fixed line subscribers and more than 40 million broadband subscribers.
 
The latest partnership with Nortel will help CTC expand its network and provide superior voice service and mobile multimedia applications such as web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging, picture messaging, gaming and advanced data services to its rapidly expanding customer base with enhanced user experience.
 
With Nortel’s CDMA Solution, CTC can use its existing software and hardware even as the network is upgraded. In addition, Nortel promises to provide cost-effective evolution path enabling CTC to easily evolve its network and will provide the highest level of service with high-bandwidth wireless capabilities to support video streaming, music downloads, and multimedia that allow customers to communicate and collaborate more effectively.
 
 “CDMA is at the heart of networks deployed by some of the world's largest operators, providing voice, data, and video to millions of consumers,” said Richard Lowe, president of Nortel’s carrier networks division, in a statement. “In China, Nortel has over 35 years of experience helping operators deliver exceptional service quality and has made China a strategic focus with significant manufacturing, R&D and service capabilities.”
 
Nortel offers CDMA Solution in multiple frequency bands: 450 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1900 MHz and 1.7/2.1 GHz. The company claims that its CDMA portfolio of core and access products allows network operators to compete successfully in the today’s market.
 
Nortel said it is committed to provide CTC with real competitive differentiation for China's increasingly hyperconnected consumers. It will supply enhanced base station controllers and base stations designed and built with power amplifiers and transceivers that ensures to reduce power consumption, creating a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly network to provide subscribers with high-quality voice and multimedia services.
