Aircom International, a network planning and optimization consultancy, reportedly has entered an agreement with Mozambique operator mcel to support the update of tools for second and third-generation networks.
Under the $1 million deal, mcel will use Aircom’s network planning and optimization tools ASSET and OPTIMA for planning and managing its new 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System network.
Mcel is in the process of launching 3G in Mozambique, which has one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent. The nation was one of the first in the region to reform its telecommunications industry.
“We already enjoy a long-standing and productive relationship with Aircom for our existing network planning and management needs,” said Luis Mhula, chief operations officer at mcel. “Now, as mcel introduces 3G into Mozambique, we’re delighted to once again work with Aircom – the quality of its tools and the expertise of its consultants makes Aircom the natural partner of choice at this exciting time.”
The mobile segment in Mozambique has experienced excellent growth rates, and yet, market penetration is still only about half the African average. Internet usage is expected to receive a boost from wireless broadband networks currently being rolled out and the introduction of 3G mobile services.
With the $1 million deal, mcel will be able to plan the new network implementation. It also enables the company to monitor its ongoing performance using the Aircom tools. Aircom International specializes in end-to-end network planning, sharing, outsourcing and operational support systems optimizations for IP and cellular networks.
Under the agreement, Aircom will also carry out measurement and model tuning, to identify optimal configurations for specific network traffic requirements and conditions. Aircom will also offer support and training for mcel engineering teams during the transition from General Packet Radio Services to 3G.
“We’re delighted that mcel has once again decided to work with Aircom for such a momentous project,” said Graham Kemp, managing director of Africa at Aircom International. “mcel’s decision to once again use Aircom’s tools and consultancy is testament to the high quality of service that we provide to all of our customers around the world.”
