SMobile Systems, a provider of security solutions for mobile phones, has introduced its Security Shield application for BlackBerry.
The Security Shield integrates its anti-virus solution, VirusGuard, with remote lock, wipe, backup, and restore functions. An antivirus solution, SMobile VirusGuard has been protecting BlackBerry devices from malware, spyware and malicious cyber attacks.
According to company officials, the combination of the product with remote lock, wipe, backup and restore functions will offer small businesses and consumers access to remote security functionality.
Previously the remote access was only available to users supported by large enterprise IT departments with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).
"A BlackBerry puts the processing power and storage capacity of a computer in the palm of your hand,” said Daniel Hoffman, chief technology officer at SMobile Systems (News - Alert).
He added that this small size makes the device susceptible to loss or theft.
With Security Shield, users can expect the data on their devices to be secure if it’s lost or stolen. In addition, Hoffman (News - Alert) said, it still protects the device from the ever-increasing threat of mobile Spyware, Trojans and Viruses.
The downloadable software prompts users to register their BlackBerry device by providing an e-mail address and password. After completion of the registration process, users can manage their device through a Web-based control panel.
If their BlackBerry is stolen or lost, the user can issue a lock and backup command to ensure the device is not only protected, but that their personal data is saved and e-mailed to them.
Additionally, by issuing the wipe command, the user can also erase the sensitive data on the device. If the device is retrieved or replaced, the user is able to restore the data using the Web-based control panel, according to officials.
In the near future, SMobile said that its plans to begin offering remote lock, wipe, backup and restore functions also for the Windows Mobile, Symbian (News - Alert) and Android platforms.
Moreover, parental controls are also expected to be available. These controls will allow parents to monitor their child's mobile phone use. Officials said that the calls, messaging and online activities will be accessible to protect children against exploitation.
Earlier in November, the company released its SMobile VirusGuard for phones with Android (News - Alert) to help protect users from the attack and proliferation of mobile viruses, spyware and other malware.
