Airvana’s HubBub UMTS femtocell has reportedly been chosen to deliver 3G connectivity as part of Pirelli's portfolio for fixed-mobile convergence.
A femtocell is a small cellular base station used in residential or small business environments. Airvana’s (News - Alert) femtocell is built on a flexible architecture that enables feature enhancements that address evolving customer and industry requirements.
Pirelli Broadband Solutions (News - Alert), the broadband access company within the Pirelli Group, develops products that enable the delivery of innovative services to the connected home and office.
“Embedding femtocell functionality into our home and office access products is a natural extension of the connectivity options leveraged by our open EpicentroTM middleware for service creation,” said Sr. Vice President Sales & Marketing, Pirelli Broadband Solutions, Francesco Schiavinato.
Schiavinato acknowledged Airvana as a company that is known both for its innovation and high industry standards which promote interoperability.
These capabilities, he believes, will help Pirelli’s operator customers deliver a superior service to their subscribers.
Both Airvana and Pirelli cooperate in Nokia Siemens Networks' 3G Femto Home Access Solution, which uses a standards-ready open architecture for femto-to-core network interaction. The companies believe that it will be easier to incorporate Pirelli's HubBub-powered broadband access devices into existing operator networks by adhering to these important industry standard initiatives including the TR-069 standard for device management.
Sanjeev Verma (News - Alert), vice president, femtocell business and corporate development, and co-founder of Airvana is confident that femtocells are set to become part of the home network and observed that the involvement of players with a converged home vision like Pirelli is helping the move in this direction.
