A new GetJar survey of 2000 European mobile users, has found that mobile social networking applications are being increasingly used instead of making voice calls. Also, the survey uncovered that users now take as much news from their mobile as they do from other media like newspapers and TV as well as the Web more on their mobile than their PC.

The significant growth and increased use of mobiles for Net surfing is attributed to significant changes in consumer choice and behaviour, according to the GetJar study.

When asked whether they used their PC or mobile more for accessing the Internet, 70 percent of heavy mobile content users said they prefer to use their mobile to surf the Web.

“Mobile apps have quickly moved from an early adopter audience to a mainstream reality for today’s mobile users,” said Ilja Laurs, founder and CEO of GetJar Networks.  “The mobile is something we always carry with us and the quality and variety of applications available is allowing us to begin to replace certain day to day activities with mobile activities to make the best use of our time.”

Also, the study uncovered that natural gaps in user’s days are being filled with mobile app usage. For instance, 43 percent of those surveyed said they use mobile apps during their travel on public transport, 17 percent at night before going to sleep and 14 percent just when they are doing nothing else in particular.

Mobile social networking sites are becoming an important way for mobile users to stay in touch. About 30 percent of those surveyed said that they use their mobile for social networking - via applications such as Nimbuzz, eBuddy and Mig33, and do so more than they use the device for voice calls.

Email and messaging apps are the first choice for 25 percent of app users, ahead of games (24 percent) and music (15 percent). Sixty-two percent said they use their mobile to play games more than a PC or gaming console and this indicates that the quality of mobile games and the accessibility of the mobile phone are making mobile gaming another mass market trend.
