Intermedia, a provider of software-as-a-service (SaaS (News - Alert)) solutions in the field of messaging and collaboration has announced that it rolled-out Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS) for BlackBerry smartphones from Research in Motion (News - Alert) (RIM).

According to Intermedia, the Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 for the BlackBerry platform is an instant messaging and presence solution that facilitates business users to securely engage in instant message conversations from their BlackBerry (News - Alert) smartphones to remote colleagues. With this, users can better connect mobile and remote employees for increased collaboration and productivity.
OCS 2007 is a business instant messaging platform. It integrates with Microsoft (News - Alert) Exchange and Microsoft Outlook to provide secure communication and integrated presence. With Presence capabilities, users can immediately determine colleagues’ status such as available, busy, away and offline, thereby allowing them to quickly connect when needed.
In 2008, Intermedia launched its first hosted OCS 2007 service. The OCS for the BlackBerry platform is an extension to the existing hosted OCS 2007 service and extends OCS capabilities to mobile users when they are out of the office. Both the solutions provide small business customers with enterprise-grade unified communications tools that greatly increase collaboration as well as productivity – in a cost-effective way.
According to a recent Osterman Research study on instant messaging (IM), mobile IM grew by 18 percent in 2008, which is one of the fastest growing segments of the IM market. Traveling employees and senior technical managers were the highest number of mobile IM users. More than half of the people surveyed responded that enabling users to use IM on mobile devices is either important or extremely important to them.
In addition, many business users are already dependent on BlackBerry smartphones for telephone and wireless email communications. Going beyond basic wireless email synchronization for enhanced connectivity, the OCS for Blackberry solution also adds secure instant messaging and presence - for true remote connectivity and productivity capabilities for mobile workers.
“Having instant messaging and presence through OCS 2007 on our BlackBerry devices makes it easier for our staff to be in constant contact and able to share information,” said Rachi Messing, VP of technology services for DiscoverReady LLC, an integrated discovery management solutions provider and Intermedia customer. “Intermedia’s services have greatly improved communications and productivity for our company and this new offering is an excellent extension of that.”
