Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics has selected Corning Gorilla Glass as the protective cover glass for its UltraTOUCH mobile phones. The company views projected capacitive technology as a preferred touch technology in today’s touch phones market and states that working with Corning (News - Alert) has allowed to it a design a thin, light-weight, stylish mobile phone.

Corning Incorporated deals in specialty glass and ceramics and creates and makes keystone components that enable high-technology systems for consumer electronics, mobile emissions control, telecommunications and life sciences. Samsung Electronics deals in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies.

Projected capacitive technology enables touches to be sensed through a protective layer in front of a display, allowing touch-monitors to be installed behind store windows or vandal-resistant glass. Corning’ Gorilla glass is designed so that after undergoing a chemical strengthening process, it provides device manufacturers with a highly durable, scratch-resistant cover glass for touch screens and flat portable displays.

Corning’ Gorilla Glass is an optical quality glass that is optimized for high-end portable devices and touch screens. It is scratch resistant, durable and able to retain its optical characteristics after extended use and abuse.

Corning claims that the unique composition of the Gorilla Glass makes it an ideal solution for personal electronic devices, such as mobile phones and notebook computers, and are especially valuable for products featuring touch-screen technologies. It is made from Corning’ proprietary fusion technology which makes a pristine surface that does not require polishing which in turn results in cost and time savings for the user. It is also an environmentally friendly alumino-silicate glass.

James Hollis, commercial director of Corning Specialty Materials, said that touch screen technology is rapidly becoming the standard in high-end mobile devices and also users want this technology to be packed in stylish designs. Gorilla Glass is designed to cater to the demands of device makers who want a solution that can endure repetitive motion and the use of touch. It is a strong and damage-resistant cover glass that can withstand high-volume user interaction.

Corning Gorilla glass is available in a variety of thicknesses, from 0.5 millimeters up to 2.0 millimeters, providing flexibility in device design as well as glass processing. It is also adaptable to scalable sheet sizes for optimal throughput.

Portugal Telecom, a global telecommunications operator and Corning had signed an agreement to work together to develop, test, and implement innovative and advanced Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology solutions and Corning had recently announced a new ClearCurve ultra-bendable multimode optical fiber suitable for data centers and enterprise networks.
